Laptops are one of the main ways people work, especially since they allow them to work from the comfort of their home. Thanks to the portable nature of the device, a laptop can sit comfortably, eliminating the need to work at a desk using a traditional computer or carrying a laptop around. Of course, this is only possible because laptops are smaller and lighter than desktop PCs, and lighter weight is always a good thing for a device that’s meant to be carried. In the 2024 calendar year, not only will laptop circumference continue to shrink, but it’s likely to run faster than ever before.
This is all thanks to a new type of memory developed by Dell. Most laptops use SO-DIMMs for memory, but Dell has developed the Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM) as an alternative. Now that CAMM has been approved by trade standards body JEDEC, it is expected to become even more popular in the coming year, which could be a very good thing for consumers.
SO-DIMM memory is likely to hit a ceiling in terms of speed, so CAMM can offer much faster speeds with design changes. CAMM memory, on the other hand, also takes up less space and does not require systems to be stacked to operate, potentially allowing for less thick and more compact laptops. There are several CAMM laptops available now, but this technology is likely to be used a lot more in 2024.
