November 21, 2023

Chandler, Arizona Chandler Public Library plans to bring its fifth mobile branch to the community. Chandler City Council approved the purchase of the library’s Bookmobile/TechnologyMobile at its Nov. 9 meeting.

Introducing a mobile library vehicle can accomplish some of the same goals as adding a branch without the expense of building a new building. With the addition of mobile books, libraries are expected to increase the number of cards issued, the number of materials issued, program participation, library visits, and book turnover. Mobile activities can also positively impact cultural and social connections with residents, improve the quality of life in neighborhoods, and enhance overall community health.

In addition to being an innovative and convenient library service point for all area residents, Chandler is home to 11 Title 1 schools and more than 40% of residents are below the median household income. There is a socio-economic need within to remove barriers to libraries. Access to the library and reading and writing opportunities can be increased at the same time.

Services available at the mobile library include STEM/STEAM instruction, Makerspace equipment, story times, job search assistance, library collections to browse, roaming reference services, mobile connectivity, technical instruction and equipment lending, heat protection supplies, and more. Masu.

The purchase of the bookmobile from Farber Specialty Vehicles was made possible by $135,000 from the Friends of Chandler Public Library and $500,000 from Intel Corporation designated for library technology enhancements. Existing library staff will be in charge.

There is a two-year lead time to design and manufacture the vehicle, so this approval from City Council secures a 2025 delivery date.
