UT Martin’s Jordan Sears, one of the highest-scoring players in the transfer portal, has cut his list of suitors to six. Texas Tech is one of the groups keeping him going.
According to an Instagram post, Sears is still considering Tech, LSU, South Carolina, Alabama, West Virginia and Arizona State. At this time, he has not set a timeline for a decision.
This season, the junior from Florida averaged an impressive 21.6 points per game. This was an increase of more than 6 points per game compared to last season.
He also recorded a 3-point shooting percentage of 43.2% this season. Additionally, he shot 83.9% from the free throw line.
In the 2023-24 season, he recorded six games with 30 points or more. That included a season-high 37 points against the Lindenwood Lions.
Of course, playing at UT Martin is not the same as playing in a major conference such as the Big 12. However, Sears had a big game against Mississippi State, his NCAA Tournament team in the SEC. In his team’s second game of the year, he scored 21 points on 7-of-19 shooting, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists against the Bulldogs.
However, Sears does have one drawback. His height is only 5 feet 11 inches. Pop Isaacs is a bit undersized at around 6’1”, which isn’t ideal for a Texas Tech team that needs to get bigger at the guard spot.
Sears also appears to be a shoot-first guard. The same goes for Isaacs, meaning it may be hard to imagine the two meshing well on the court.
This season, Sears is averaging 16.4 shots per game and Isaacs is averaging 14.1 shots per game. If they play together, who else can take the shot?
At the end of the day, this is a player Texas Tech should let go of. Sure, Sears can fill it, but he doesn’t seem to fit the mold of what this program really needs in a point guard.
Technicians need floor generals and facilitators, not shot-first guards. Also, in the Big 12, having such a small guard on the floor next to Isaacs might bully Tech into submission.
Still, this is a name to keep an eye on as he clearly has interest in the Red Raiders. So keep an eye on Sears and his recruiting efforts, especially when he takes an official visit to Lubbock in the coming days and weeks.
