MoRD partners with Delhi Technological University for application of geospatial technology and AI

New Delhi: The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, formalizing the partnership in the application of geospatial technology and artificial intelligence (AI), with major implications for India’s technological advancement. The MoU is a project under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), an ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging ground- and space-based geospatial technologies and AI to monitor and manage assets. The focus is on “BhuPRAHARI”.

The project will be executed by HydroSense Lab led by Professor Manabendra Saharia.

“This cooperation is an initiative to harness the power of technology to improve rural development processes,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The integration of cutting-edge technology is expected to modernize the way rural development projects are planned, monitored and executed, ensuring accountability and optimizing resource allocation, officials said. Additionally, this MoU marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to explore and apply technological solutions to challenges facing rural areas.

Through this partnership, Delhi Technological University and the Indian Ministry of Defense are setting a precedent for how academic and government institutions can work together to foster innovation and drive socio-economic progress, the statement said.

The BhuPRAHARI project is scheduled to start immediately and both parties are keen to translate this vision into reality.
