City of Huntsville confirms details of cybersecurity incident

The Town of Huntsville is currently investigating a cybersecurity incident that occurred on March 10, 2024. In response to this incident, the town immediately instituted incident response protocols and requested cybersecurity experts to investigate. The impact of this event resulted in a service disruption as systems were taken offline as a precaution.

The City can now confirm that this event was a ransomware attack that affected the Town’s network and systems.

The town is able to confirm that its systems were compromised and some data was compromised, but it is unclear at this time whether the affected data includes personal information.

“We are working diligently with experts and authorities to determine the nature and scope of the data affected. This includes a thorough review and verification of inclusion,” said Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Colley. “Cybersecurity incidents require forensic investigations involving multiple teams, and we expect this process to take several weeks to complete.”

Once an investigation is completed, including a thorough review and verification of affected data, and it is determined that personal information has been compromised, affected individuals will be directly notified as soon as possible.

Mayor Nancy Alcock said: “The community can be assured that we are working efficiently and effectively to determine the scope of the breach and will provide updates as soon as possible. ”, he admits. “The Town recognizes that the community has many questions regarding the details of the attack, and while the investigation continues, there is information that can be shared and information that will not be made public due to safety concerns.”
